Content

  • The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

This is Block 2 of 4.

We are continuing with our Modern text "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes", a dystopian novel by Suzanne Collins, released in 2020. It serves as a prequel to the "Hunger Games" trilogy and explores the origins of several elements central to the original series. Set 64 years before the events of "The Hunger Games," the novel provides an in-depth look at the early life of 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, who would later become the tyrannical President of Panem but is struggling to maintain his family's fading status in the Capitol. The once-powerful Snow family is now impoverished, and Coriolanus sees the upcoming 10th Hunger Games as an opportunity to restore his family's fortune and reputation. Coriolanus is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from District 12. Unlike future games, where tributes are merely thrown into the arena, this early version involves more direct influence from Capitol mentors. Coriolanus' relationship with Lucy Gray becomes central to the plot, blending elements of manipulation, ambition, and genuine connection.

  • As well as following the plot, we will consider characters, themes and language in the novel and there will be opportunities to read aloud and discuss during the class.

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”

Holly, Parent

“Our family are full time travellers and the hub is a life line for us. The children get to see and speak to adults who show a real interest in their learning and their lives. They get to pick lessons that they are interested in and have fun learning something new. The social hub was a real life line for us too. My 3 have made friends and love getting to chat to children and adults daily too. ”

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”
