  • Leave Taking by Winsome Pinnock - Block 2

    This is the second block and Block 1 should be completed prior to this.

    "Leave Taking" by Winsome Pinnock is a powerful play exploring themes of migration, identity, and generational conflict within a Black British family.

    The story follows Enid, a Jamaican mother who has sacrificed everything to build a better life for her two daughters, Del and Viv, in Britain. However, she struggles to connect with them as they navigate their own cultural identities and the challenges of growing up in a society that often rejects them.

    Feeling disconnected from their Caribbean heritage yet not fully accepted in Britain, Del and Viv rebel against their mother’s traditional values. As tensions rise, Enid seeks guidance from a spiritual healer, Mai, highlighting the family's longing for connection and belonging.

    The play poignantly portrays the emotional struggles of the Windrush generation and their children, examining issues of racism, displacement, and the search for home.

    It has been adopted by AQA, OCR and Eduqas as part of their GCSE English Literature specifications.

    There is no need to purchase the text unless you wish to do so as the script will be provided on screen.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.

    You will receive a confirmation email from Zoom, containing details of your live registration.

    You will also have a reminder one hour before the start of each class.

    The live session can be accessed from the 'Join Webinar' button in these emails.

  • I've missed a session, can I have the recording?

    All recordings are uploaded within 24 hours to here - your dashboard - so you can watch whenever is convenient.
