  • Hercule Poirot - The Short Stories of Agatha Christie

    Our final block of Modern fiction for this year celebrates the short stories of Agatha Christie, who created one of the most famous detectives in fiction.

    Hercule Poirot is a retired Belgian police officer who has settled in England. He is known for his sharp mind, attention to detail, and belief in using “the little grey cells” to solve crimes. Unlike detectives who rely on physical action, Poirot prefers careful observation, logical thinking, and an understanding of human nature. He is also instantly recognisable for his neat appearance, formal manners, and pride in his perfectly groomed moustache.

    The short stories typically begin with a puzzling situation - a theft, a disappearance, or a suspicious death - which Poirot is asked to investigate.

    As he interviews suspects and examines clues, what seems confusing at first gradually becomes clearer. The stories build toward a satisfying conclusion, where Poirot gathers everyone together and explains the solution with precision and flair.

    These tales are not just about solving crimes; they also explore themes of justice, deception, and the hidden motives behind people’s actions.

    This is a standalone block and no previous study needs to have been done.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.
