Content

  • Animal Farm
    by George Orwell

    Block 2 of 3

This is Block 2 of 3 - it is essential that the previous block is completed before starting this one.

We continue with our study of "Animal Farm", a political allegory written by George Orwell and first published in 1945. Set on a fictional farm in England, the novella uses a group of talking animals who overthrow their human farmer in hopes of creating an equal and just society. However, as the pigs - led by the cunning Napoleon - seize power, the farm gradually descends into tyranny and inequality, mirroring the corruption of revolutionary ideals.

Through this fable, Orwell critiques totalitarianism, particularly the Soviet Union under Stalin, and explores themes of power, propaganda, and betrayal.

NOTE: This novel will be studied over THREE blocks. This is Block 1 of 3.

  • Course Objectives:

As part of our studies, we will develop our understanding of character and context and focus on language and structure.

As this is a text used by all the major exam boards for GCSE English Literature, we will also look at exam questions.
