    Animal Farm by George Orwell

    Block 1 of 3

    Our new Modern text for September is "Animal Farm", a political allegory written by George Orwell and first published in 1945.

    Set on a fictional farm in England, the novella uses a group of talking animals who overthrow their human farmer in hopes of creating an equal and just society. However, as the pigs - led by the cunning Napoleon - seize power, the farm gradually descends into tyranny and inequality, mirroring the corruption of revolutionary ideals.

    Through this fable, Orwell critiques totalitarianism, particularly the Soviet Union under Stalin, and explores themes of power, propaganda, and betrayal.

    Note: This novel will be studied over THREE blocks. This is Block 1 of 3.

    Course Objectives:

    As part of our studies, we will develop our understanding of character and context and focus on language and structure.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.

    You will receive a confirmation email from Zoom, containing details of your live registration.

    You will also have a reminder one hour before the start of each class.

    The live session can be accessed from the 'Join Webinar' button in these emails.

  • I've missed a session, can I have the recording?

    All recordings are uploaded within 24 hours to here - your dashboard - so you can watch whenever is convenient.
