Exploring Musical Intervals and Tonic Triads

If you would like to join us for the first time (live) in April, you will need to catch up on ‘Pitch, Keys and Scales, Oh My!’ and ‘Minor Scales: The Next Level’ before joining in with us. You can then catch up on the recordings of Grade 3 ‘Beat it! Rhythm 1’ and ‘Beat it! Rhythm 2’ in your own time. If you would like to follow recordings rather than joining in live, please start with Grade 3 'Beat it! Rhythm 1'.

If you are unsure whether or not you are ready for Grade 3, you can complete this online Grade 2 test: https://www.abrsm.org/en-gb/music-theory/practice-resources which will enable you to assess your knowledge and help you to decide.

In this block, we will extend our work on intervals, learning to recognise perfect, major and minor intervals.

Building on our recent exploration of major and minor scales (with up to four sharps and flats!), students will also learn about tonic triads in those same keys, helping them understand how chords grow naturally out of scales.

We will follow the ABRSM workbook which will be accompanied by activities and quizzes to ensure that our lessons are engaging and fun!

  • Course Objectives:

To be able to recognise and name a perfect, major and minor interval

To be able to recognise and name tonic triads in major and minor keys with up to four sharps and flats

    Specialist
    Resources Needed:

To aid us with our learning, we will be using ‘Discovering Music Theory The ABRSM Grade 3 Workbook’ which will need to be purchased. This book can retail from £8.50 to £10.50 (please shop around) and will also be used within all of the following blocks.

Tutor

Natalie .

Piano Tutor

Hi, I’m Natalie and I am the piano/keyboard teacher for the hub. I am a mum of two and a qualified primary school teacher. I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old and have been teaching piano for around 24 years- both online and in person. I am also a classically trained singer and was a member of the Cantamus Girls’ Choir for ten years. Pre-Covid, I enjoyed singing to residents in care homes and running my own dementia choir. Music is such a huge part of my life and I am thoroughly enjoying teaching in the hub, where I can share my love of music and enjoy watching children flourish.

“After a year of mostly science and art, my child has recently started Creative Writing class. From the first lesson I was blown away by the quality of the teaching, the standard of work the children were submitting and the supportive environment of the group. The tutor has a fantastic rapport with her students and it is also so nice (and great for their self-confidence) to see the students give each other great feedback and encouragement.”

Louise, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent

“I've recommended so many people to the hub, you guys have revolutionised home ed for us. Literally. After building up our confidence with using the hub, I've actually been able to take on work based back out in the community while my daughter is at home studying. Thanks for everything you are doing! ”
