Content

  • Pitch Perfect!

In this block we are going to become masters of transposition. We’ll start by getting super-confident with the four musical clefs: treble, bass, alto and tenor. Then things get more interesting… We’ll learn how to take notes written in one clef and rewrite them in another clef- including transposing melodies at the octave. We’ll also tackle melodies containing accidentals, so we can keep track of exactly what happens to every sharp, flat and natural when our music changes clef.

Next, we’ll discover the world of transposing instruments. Why does a written C sometimes not sound like a C? We’ll learn how to move between written pitch and concert pitch for instruments in Bb, A and F — and, crucially, how to work out whether we need to transpose up or down. In addition, we will become experts at spotting the new key after transposition.

By the end of this block, transposition should feel like a set of clever rules that you can use to move music wherever you want it to go! In short: different notation, different key, different instrument= same music!

  • Course Objectives:

To be able to read the treble, bass, alto and tenor clefs with confidence
To be able to transpose between clefs
To be able to transpose by a major 2nd, minor 3rd and perfect 5th
To be able to identify a key signature after it has been transposed
To be able to transpose for instruments in Bb, A and F

    Specialist Resources Needed:

To support our learning, students will need a copy of the 'Discovering Music Theory: Grade 5 Workbook'. I would also strongly recommend purchasing 'The AB Guide to Music Theory Part 1', which will be referred to regularly throughout the course. Short extracts from this book may occasionally be set as homework to help reinforce and consolidate key concepts covered in lessons.

An accompanying answer book is also available, although this is entirely optional. All workbook answers will be explained and discussed during lessons. However, some students may find it useful for additional clarification or for checking their work while completing exercises—just don't peek too soon!

Tutor

Natalie .

Piano and Music Theory Tutor

Hi, I’m Natalie and I am the piano/keyboard teacher for the hub. I am a mum of two and a qualified primary school teacher.
I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old and have been teaching piano for around 24 years- both online and in person. I am also a classically trained singer and was a member of the Cantamus Girls’ Choir for ten years.
Pre-Covid, I enjoyed singing to residents in care homes and running my own dementia choir. Music is such a huge part of my life and I am thoroughly enjoying teaching in the hub, where I can share my love of music and enjoy watching children flourish.

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
