Content

  • This block follows the ABRSM syllabus and covers everything that you need to know about Terms & Signs plus Music in Context in Grade 1. We will be learning all of the different musical terms for dynamics and tempo, plus terms that describe how a note/phrase should be played e.g. cantabile or dolce. We will also be learning to recognise the different signs on a piece of music e.g. staccato or a slur. When we have learned these terms and signs, we will then look at music in context and answer questions on short passages of music.

  • If you are new to these lessons, you will need to purchase the ‘Discovering Music Theory ABRSM Grade 1 Workbook’. • To be able to name the different terms to describe dynamics and tempo • To be able to name the different terms to describe ‘how’ to play a note/phrase • To be able to answer questions about short passages of music. If you are joining us for the first time via recordings, you will either need a good understanding of pitch, rhythm and keys or you can purchase our previous blocks starting from Block 1 - Pitch. If you would like to join in live and it's your first time, you will need a good understanding of pitch, rhythm and keys.

Tutor

Natalie .

Piano Tutor

Hi, I’m Natalie and I am the piano/keyboard teacher for the hub. I am a mum of two and a qualified primary school teacher. I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old and have been teaching piano for around 24 years- both online and in person. I am also a classically trained singer and was a member of the Cantamus Girls’ Choir for ten years. Pre-Covid, I enjoyed singing to residents in care homes and running my own dementia choir. Music is such a huge part of my life and I am thoroughly enjoying teaching in the hub, where I can share my love of music and enjoy watching children flourish.

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”

“Our family are full time travellers and the hub is a life line for us. The children get to see and speak to adults who show a real interest in their learning and their lives. They get to pick lessons that they are interested in and have fun learning something new. The social hub was a real life line for us too. My 3 have made friends and love getting to chat to children and adults daily too. ”

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”
