  • Life Beneath Our Feet – Soil Ecology and Decomposition

Welcome to Life Beneath Our Feet
Where a hidden world of life, decay, and transformation is waiting to be discovered.
In this fascinating hands-on module, children explore the living systems within soil and uncover the vital processes of decomposition that keep ecosystems thriving. From tiny minibeasts to fungi and worms, they’ll investigate how organisms work together to recycle nutrients and support life above ground.
Through outdoor exploration, experiments, and creative investigations, children will think like young ecologists—observing closely, asking questions, and discovering how even the smallest creatures play a big role in our world.
Blending science, nature, and enquiry, this module builds a deeper understanding of how life beneath our feet supports the entire planet.
Perfect for nature lovers, curious explorers, and children who enjoy getting hands-on with the natural world.

Dr Jo .

Nature Quest and STEAM Explorers Tutor

Hi, I’m Dr Jo – scientist and educator. I teach Nature Quest and STEAM Explorers in the Hub, where we dive into the wonders of science, nature, and creative problem-solving - all through hands-on, creative, curious learning.
With a background in science and years of experience in education, I’m passionate about sparking that “wow!” moment in children — whether we’re mixing potions from plants, exploring the changing Earth, or inventing with STEAM. I love helping young learners connect ideas, ask big questions, and explore the world through fun, engaging, and meaningful experiences.
When I’m not teaching in the Hub, you might find me delivering workshops, running STEM clubs, developing learning resources, supporting teachers, and training scientists!
I can’t wait to welcome you to the adventure - let’s explore, experiment and get inspired by the amazing world around us!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle!
