Content

  • Whale Bones

Ocean Discovery 2025-26 was an introduction to ocean animals in general. This year we will be zooming in close to some particular ocean animals, giving time to learning more about them and exploring some other ocean topics. Coming live from Peru every week, we will be looking at a real whale skeleton in my garden, we will explore how people live in the fishing village in which I live, explore how the ocean is cared for, explore lots of the fun things you can do in the ocean, and explore what we can do to help people to understand how to protect the ocean and nature in general.

This year, Ocean Discovery takes you even deeper into the ocean! 🌊 The lessons in this block will unravel with footage of the complete humpback whale skeleton that I have in my garden here in Peru. 🐋

I will use videos and photos to tell you about the unique experience of collecting a complete whale skeleton from a humpback whale that we found washed up on a beach close to where I live in February 2025. We decided to make something positive out of this very sad event and due to the lack of formal law enforcement in Peru, particularly around marine conservation and animal protection, we had the opportunity to collect all the bones of the whale. The whole collection process took 4 months and I now have the complete skeleton in my garden. During those 4 months and ever since, we have learnt a huge amount about these ocean giants. The reason for the bone collection is to be able to educate children and people of all ages about whales. We will use worksheets, crafts and games to learn about whales and if not only for their sheer size, you will be fascinated by how their bodies are especially adapted to live in oceans, and how these adaptations developed over millions of years from when they were once land mammals. This class is suitable for all from age 6 and above; a little bit of science mixed with fun activities and ocean passion from you, the students!

Lesson 1: An introduction to whales in general, covering new facts not covered in the whale lessons last year including whale migration and whale behaviour.

Lesson 2: Why do whales wash up on beaches? What can we do to help?

Lesson 3: Finding the whale washed up here on the beach, forming the bone collection plan, including the decomposition process.

Lesson 4: Collecting the bones. (A four month long process).

Lesson 5: The whale saving brigade and whale protection.

  • Course Objectives:

See a real humpback whale skeleton in its entirety and look in detail at different parts.

Learn about whale behaviour including migration and biological process like breathing and moving.

Begin to understand what we can do to protect whales and other ocean and land creatures.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

There will be worksheets to print off and if you want to do the craft, some easy to find objects for that.

Tutor

Nikki .

Ocean Discovery Tutor

Hi! I’m Nikki. I teach the Ocean Discovery course on the hub.
I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago. (How can that be?!) I have worked in many different educational settings; mainstream primary and secondary schools, schools for students with different needs, as a Transition Teacher to support the move from Primary to Secondary, as a Forest School Leader and latterly as an online tutor.
I have two boys aged 10 and 14 and have homeschooled them for 7 years.
I absolutely love working with children; seeing them progress really floats my boat!
My passion is nature, in particular, the ocean. I am very excited to be teaching the Ocean Discovery course here on the hub. There is just so much to discover in the Natural World and I just love sharing this with young people.

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

“Thank you so much for everything!! You have been an absolute life saver. There was a time when I couldn't possibly imagine my son taking any GCSEs at all, and here we are ploughing through the past papers and sending him off to exams with a calm and confident son. Extraordinary! Thank goodness for you and your efforts to help kids like him - we will be eternally grateful.”

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent
