  • Ocean Reptiles

We will continue to learn about Ocean Inhabitants.

Block 1 introduced the five ocean animal groups, Block 2 was Marine Mammals, Block 3 was all about Marine Fish, and Block 4 will continue to develop the background theme of ocean sustainability as we discover more about Marine animals; this new block we will focus on Ocean Reptiles including Marine Turtles.

I will also be asking you to vote for the best sunset photographs from our ‘Get Out and About’ Photography Competition.

Also, every participant who sent in a photo will be awarded a certificate of participation during this block.

Welcome to Ocean Discovery Block 4.
    Let’s go diving!

I have so enjoyed the past three blocks; getting to know such a great group of young people with so many students who are really very passionate about the ocean and want to learn more and more about its creatures and how to protect them.

I am so happy to be able to continue to offer these classes with you all; it's another opportunity to share my love of the ocean with young people, teach in a fun and interactive way, and support ocean protection for the future.

We spent Block 1 learning that animals of the ocean can be grouped into five groups:

Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Birds and Marine Invertebrates.

In Block 2 and 3, we dived deeper into the underwater world of MARINE MAMMALS and of FISH.

Block 4 is all about OCEAN REPTILES!

Here, where I live in the north of Peru, the marine turtle is a frequent visitor and I look forward to showing you some of them. I should be able to catch some on camera, maybe even underwater.

  • We will use diagrams, videos, interactive worksheets, quizzes and sometimes craft activities to explore the following and more:

Learning about the different species of marine turtle and how they come out of the ocean to lay their eggs. Did you know they return to the same beach they hatched on to lay their eggs? How do they find the beach they hatched on? How do the baby turtles get from the nest to the ocean? As they are a species that visits here a lot, we will look at some of the local projects whose aim it is to protect them and learn about what you can do to help protect them. We may even have the opportunity to see some hatching!

We will also dive into the world of Saltwater Crocodiles (although not get too close, “Eeeek!”). We will then move onto to learn about Sea Snakes and Marine Iguanas.

All of these species will be covered while sharing a deep love of the ocean and an appreciation of the importance of sustainability for the future of our world's waters. I will keep my lessons dynamic and interactive, giving students a frequent chance to share what they love about the ocean. I always aim to answer their questions and investigate the topics they are most interested in.

I'm really excited to share yet more fascinating ocean facts with you all! There is so so much to learn about our oceans and we need to know it, so that we can protect the oceans in the future. See you soon!

    Course Objectives:

To have FUN learning about the ocean and its creatures.

To learn facts about ocean reptiles and their different behaviours.

To begin to understand what we can do to help these species to live healthier lives in our oceans.

Tutor

Nikki .

Ocean Discovery Tutor

Hi! I’m Nikki. I teach the Ocean Discovery course on the hub. I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago. (How can that be?!) I have worked in many different educational settings; mainstream primary and secondary schools, schools for students with different needs, as a Transition Teacher to support the move from Primary to Secondary, as a Forest School Leader and latterly as an online tutor. I have two boys aged 10 and 14 and have homeschooled them for 7 years. I absolutely love working with children; seeing them progress really floats my boat! My passion is nature, in particular, the ocean. I am very excited to be teaching the Ocean Discovery course here on the hub. There is just so much to discover in the Natural World and I just love sharing this with young people.
