Content

  • Ocean Invertebrates: Octopus, Jellyfish, Squid and Much More

All the blocks this year include a different animal group in our Ocean Discovery Year 1 course. This block is all about Marine Invertebrates.

Welcome to Ocean Discovery Block 5. I am so happy to be able to offer these classes with you all; it's another opportunity to share my love of the ocean with young people, teach in a fun and interactive way, and support ocean protection for the future.

We spent Block 1 learning that animals of the ocean can be grouped into five groups: Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Birds and Marine Invertebrates.

In Block 2, we dived deeper into the underwater world of MARINE MAMMALS. Now, just like when I took you to the fishing pier in Block 1, the whale watching tour in Block 2, a visit to the edible fish processing plant in Block 3, swimming with turtles in Block 4, in Block 5 I will take you freediving to look for octopus and other MARINE INVERTEBRATES in my local waters here in Peru.

We will use diagrams, videos, interactive worksheets, quizzes and sometimes craft activities to explore the weird and wonderful world of cephalopods, crustaceans and marine invertebrates. What are THEY?? Yes, this is probably the group of ocean animals we know least about… octopuses, jellyfish, squid, crabs, lobsters, oysters, anemones, sea slugs, sea bunnies and sea sheep.

We will be plunging into the deep once again this time to explore the mysterious world of these ocean curiosities. Does the octopus really have 9 brains? What is a sea sheep? Are all jellyfish dangerous? How does the giant squid hunt? What about the KRAKEN?

As in previous blocks, this block will also have a craft element; we will represent an element of the underwater world through the use of art and craft. So, come on adventure with me and explore the spirit of the ocean! 🐋🌊

  • Course Objectives:

    1. Have fun learning facts about marine invertebrates.

    2. Share your passion for the ocean with other ocean lovers.

    3. Learn what we can do to protect the ocean and it’s inhabitants for the future.

Tutor

Nikki .

Ocean Discovery Tutor

Hi! I’m Nikki. I teach the Ocean Discovery course on the hub. I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago. (How can that be?!) I have worked in many different educational settings; mainstream primary and secondary schools, schools for students with different needs, as a Transition Teacher to support the move from Primary to Secondary, as a Forest School Leader and latterly as an online tutor. I have two boys aged 10 and 14 and have homeschooled them for 7 years. I absolutely love working with children; seeing them progress really floats my boat! My passion is nature, in particular, the ocean. I am very excited to be teaching the Ocean Discovery course here on the hub. There is just so much to discover in the Natural World and I just love sharing this with young people.

“After a year of mostly science and art, my child has recently started Creative Writing class. From the first lesson I was blown away by the quality of the teaching, the standard of work the children were submitting and the supportive environment of the group. The tutor has a fantastic rapport with her students and it is also so nice (and great for their self-confidence) to see the students give each other great feedback and encouragement.”

Louise, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
