Content

  • Ocean Birds

All the blocks this year have been on ocean animals, a different animal group each block. We have covered ocean mammals, ocean fish, ocean reptiles, ocean invertebrates, Block 6 is about Ocean Birds.

Welcome to Block 6 of Ocean Discovery! Get ready to spread your wings and discover the incredible world of ocean birds! In this exciting new learning block, we’ll explore the lives of seabirds found along our coasts and oceans - from soaring pelicans and graceful gulls to diving cormorants and powerful frigatebirds. We’ll learn how these amazing animals survive at sea, where they nest, what they eat, and the fascinating behaviours that help them thrive in harsh coastal environments.

As always, our learning goes far beyond the classroom. We’ll head out on beach adventures to observe birds in their natural habitats, practice bird spotting and identification, and learn how ocean birds are connected to healthy marine ecosystems. Along the way, students will take part in a hands-on craft activity, fun quizzes, games, and our much-loved photography competition from Block 2 makes a come-back; this time with a summer theme!

Students will have the opportunity to capture the beauty of ocean or inland wildlife through their own creative lens. Every entry will receive a certificate of participation. Through all these activities, my students will feel even more inspired to go out and explore during their summer holidays which are just around the corner!

Having already explored mammals, fish, reptiles, and invertebrates, it’s now time to look to the skies and uncover the secrets of the ocean’s feathered explorers! I really look forward to seeing you in my lessons. 🌊🐧🪶

Tutor

Nikki .

Ocean Discovery Tutor

Hi! I’m Nikki. I teach the Ocean Discovery course on the hub. I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago. (How can that be?!) I have worked in many different educational settings; mainstream primary and secondary schools, schools for students with different needs, as a Transition Teacher to support the move from Primary to Secondary, as a Forest School Leader and latterly as an online tutor. I have two boys aged 10 and 14 and have homeschooled them for 7 years. I absolutely love working with children; seeing them progress really floats my boat! My passion is nature, in particular, the ocean. I am very excited to be teaching the Ocean Discovery course here on the hub. There is just so much to discover in the Natural World and I just love sharing this with young people.

“We have been studying with the hub for many years now and both my boys have really appreciated the variety of courses available and the wonderfully inspiring teachers you have. We have done loads of courses, many of which have allowed my boys have successfully gained GCSEs and other qualifications like arts awards”

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent

“Very grateful for all your hard work, and thankful for all your help during these 4 years (can't believe it's been so long) - you don't know and I can't express in words how much pressure you take of our shoulders with this amazing palette of classes that you offer.”

Cristiana, parent

“I've recommended so many people to the hub, you guys have revolutionised home ed for us. Literally. After building up our confidence with using the hub, I've actually been able to take on work based back out in the community while my daughter is at home studying. Thanks for everything you are doing! ”

Tina, parent

“A massive thankyou for all you do at the £2 hub, we have been with you from the start and seen you grow but this is the first time we have done GCSE exams with you, and with great results! Thanks ”

Hub parent

“After a year of mostly science and art, my child has recently started Creative Writing class. From the first lesson I was blown away by the quality of the teaching, the standard of work the children were submitting and the supportive environment of the group. The tutor has a fantastic rapport with her students and it is also so nice (and great for their self-confidence) to see the students give each other great feedback and encouragement.”
