Content

  • Fish

We will continue to learn about Ocean Inhabitants and continue to develop the background theme of ocean sustainability as we discover more about fish.

Welcome to Ocean Discovery Block 3.

I am so happy to be able to continue to offer these classes with you all; it's another opportunity to share my love of the ocean with young people, teach in a fun and interactive way, and support ocean protection for the future.

We spent Block 1 learning that animals of the ocean can be grouped into five groups: Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Birds and Marine Invertebrates.

In Block 2, we dived deeper into the underwater world of MARINE MAMMALS.

Now, just like when I took you to the fishing pier in Block 1 and the whale watching tour in Block 2, I will take you on visits to different ocean areas in this block. ALSO, look what else: We will launch and judge an OCEAN and RIVER PHOTOGRAPHY competition in Block 3!

We will also use diagrams, videos, interactive worksheets, quizzes and sometimes craft activities to explore the following and more:

Block 3 is all about FISH. Curious about sharks? What do you think about swimming with sharks? What’s a Shark Band? What about shark nets? How dangerous are they really?

With so many species to discover, we will choose a few awesome ones to zoom in on.

  • We will delve deep into the Mariana Trench, the deepest area that we know about in the World’s oceans. Who and what lives there? How do they survive? We will look at some fish that have special and sensational adaptations to their living environment.

We will learn about the fishing industry and follow the journey that the fish takes from the ocean to your plate. Even in the form of Birds Eye Fishfingers!

All of these topics will be covered while sharing a deep love of the ocean and an appreciation of the importance of sustainability for the future of our world’s waters.

We’ll be diving into all these mysteries - and plenty more surprises along the way!

    I’m really excited! Again!

AND, I will of course also make time to hear about students’ different ocean experiences and will endeavour to answer questions and investigate queries along the way.

    Course Objectives:

To have fun learning about the ocean and its creatures.

To learn facts about ocean fish and their different living environments in different sections of the ocean.

To begin to understand what we can do to help these species to live healthier lives in our waters.

Tutor

Nikki .

Ocean Discovery Tutor

Hi! I’m Nikki. I teach the Ocean Discovery course on the hub. I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago. (How can that be?!) I have worked in many different educational settings; mainstream primary and secondary schools, schools for students with different needs, as a Transition Teacher to support the move from Primary to Secondary, as a Forest School Leader and latterly as an online tutor. I have two boys aged 10 and 14 and have homeschooled them for 7 years. I absolutely love working with children; seeing them progress really floats my boat! My passion is nature, in particular, the ocean. I am very excited to be teaching the Ocean Discovery course here on the hub. There is just so much to discover in the Natural World and I just love sharing this with young people.
