Content

  • Marine Mammals & Amazing Oceans

Block 1 was an introduction to ocean animals, including ocean sustainability, this block will build on what we learnt about marine mammals, keeping the ocean sustainability theme.

Welcome to Ocean Discovery Block 2.

I am so happy to be able to offer these classes with you all; it's another opportunity to share my love of the ocean with young people, teach in a fun and interactive way, and support ocean protection for the future.

We have spent Block 1 learning that animals of the ocean can be grouped into five groups: Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Birds and Marine Invertebrates.

In Block 2, we will be diving much deeper into the underwater world of MARINE MAMMALS. Just like when I took you to the fishing pier in Block 1, I will take you on visits to different ocean areas including a whale-watching trip in Peru! We will also use diagrams, videos, interactive worksheets, quizzes and sometimes craft activities to explore the following and more:

How do marine mammals breathe underwater? How whales and dolphins use sonar to communicate and how to identify different cetaceans by their song? Do these mammals really have emotions similar to humans? Why is the polar bear’s skin black? How can we help our fellow mammal friends to face challenges of the 21st century? Also, what did the ocean ever do for us?

  • We’ll be diving into all these mysteries - and plenty more surprises along the way!
    I’m really excited!

I will also make time to hear about students’ different ocean experiences and will endeavour to answer questions and investigate queries along the way.

    Course Objectives:

To have fun learning about the ocean and its creatures.

To learn facts about ocean mammals.

To begin to understand what we can do to help these animals to live longer lives in our oceans.

Tutor

Nikki .

Ocean Discovery Tutor

Hi! I’m Nikki. I teach the Ocean Discovery course on the hub. I trained as a teacher over 20 years ago. (How can that be?!) I have worked in many different educational settings; mainstream primary and secondary schools, schools for students with different needs, as a Transition Teacher to support the move from Primary to Secondary, as a Forest School Leader and latterly as an online tutor. I have two boys aged 10 and 14 and have homeschooled them for 7 years. I absolutely love working with children; seeing them progress really floats my boat! My passion is nature, in particular, the ocean. I am very excited to be teaching the Ocean Discovery course here on the hub. There is just so much to discover in the Natural World and I just love sharing this with young people.
