Content

  • Festivals of Light - Decorations

In this exciting block of lessons, children will create beautiful decorations to brighten their homes for the festive season. Inspired by traditional Japanese origami techniques, these projects blend creativity with functionality, focusing on designs that incorporate 'festivals of light' as a central theme. Each session, Hannah will guide participants through step-by-step instructions to craft cute decorations to hang on a Christmas tree or garland. Along the way, students will also gain a glimpse into the history and cultural significance of origami, adding an enriching educational layer to the crafting experience.

Children will learn about cultural traditions and natural elements associated with autumn in these interactive and enjoyable sessions. Through guided activities and discussions, they'll develop creativity, problem-solving abilities and by the end of the block, they'll proudly showcase a collection of unique origami creations inspired by the colours and themes of autumn.

  • It would help if your children have done a little origami before or completed at least one block of Origami sessions here in the hub prior to joining. That way, they know what to expect, the pace of the lesson and it won't be too tricky for them.
All sessions are recorded so if they can re-watch, pause and go at their own pace if following live is too difficult.
They are still welcome to join the live session so that they can see everyone's creations. :)

I recommend using origami paper for these projects. I use 15cm x 15cm papers. Normal paper such as A4 printer paper is too heavy and becomes difficult to fold. Also, it is very difficult to cut precisely into squares needed for most origami projects.

STEAM, Coding, Lego & JapanTutor

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!

“The group is wonderful, the classes are great, the teachers are awesome and my kids feel they belong to a community. They've made real friends with whom they spend hours chatting and playing. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't find this group.…. you have made a gigantic difference in many people's lives and have contributed greatly to ensuring many kids enjoy studying and grow up happy and mentally healthy and that is pretty amazing.”

“You're pure genius. It’s given us a lifeline! There are no words I can say to describe just how incredible it is to have amazing teachers at our fingertips to teach my daughter (and all the other kids here). Because of YOU and all the TEACHERS here, I am able to take my daughter out of an environment that wasn’t suitable for her and still give her a good education, that's so affordable, at home where she feels safe and comfortable. ”

“The way you’ve structured The £2 Tuition Hub clearly comes from a deep and personal understanding of what anxious/ND children and young people need in order to be able to engage with and enjoy their learning. I’d honestly be lost without your work, so big thanks to you and the rest of your team. ”

“....The Enterprising minds course has helped her to be able to do a business plan and her accounts. I/ we just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all in the hub. When we started HE 2 years ago we were thrown in it and wasn't sure that we would manage it. But the help all the Teachers have provided via the hub has really made this unfamiliar journey not only bearable, but enjoyable. ”
