Learning phase 4 consonant blends, polysyllabic words and common exception words

Phase 4 builds upon Phase 3 sessions (blocks 1-3)

Begin to build your phase 4 phonics knowledge through fun interactive activities and games!

We will be revisiting all sounds learnt so far, along with common exception (tricky) words learnt in phases 2 and 3.

We will focus on learning to blend to read and segment to spell CVCC and CCVC words containing phase 3 digraphs and trigraphs and introducing consonant blends, alongside introducing the common exception words ‘said’, ‘so’, ‘have’, ‘like’.

We will also be learning to read and spell polysyllabic words.

We will use our knowledge of these blends and words to practise reading and children will be encouraged to ‘have a go’ at writing.

We love a game of bingo or a Kahoot quiz to help consolidate what we have been learning!

Course Objectives:

To apply consonant blends when blending to read words, and when segmenting to spell words.

To learn to read and spell common exception words.

Resources Needed:

Pen and paper or a whiteboard and pen. Children may like to use magnetic letters, or alternatively have the individual letters written out on pieces of paper.
