Content

  • Phase 5 Split Digraphs and Common Exception Words

    Builds on Phase 5 (Block 1) from Jan 2026 and Phase 5 (Block 2) from Feb/Mar 2026

    Continue to build your phase 5 phonics knowledge and reading and writing confidence through fun interactive activities and games!

    We will revisit all alternative graphemes learnt and common exception (tricky) words learnt in blocks 1 and 2.

    We will introduce the split digraphs a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e and the common exception words 'because', 'friends', 'once' and 'please'.

    We will use our new knowledge of these alternative graphemes and split digraphs to practise reading and children will be encouraged to ‘have a go’ at writing.

    Regular Kahoot quizzes and games of bingo help us to consolidate what we have been learning!

  • Course Objectives:

    To recognise split digraphs for reading and spelling.

    To apply split digraphs when blending to read words and segmenting to spell words.

    To learnt to read and spell common exception words.

    Resources Needed:

    Pen and paper or a whiteboard and pen.

    Children may like to use magnetic letters, or alternatively have the individual letters written out on pieces of paper.

Phonics Tutor

Hi Everyone! I’m Lisa. I am a qualified primary teacher and have been teaching since 2009, predominately in EYFS, and some in Year 1, 2, 3 and 4. I have two children of my own who are 6 and 3, and I’m based in Gloucestershire. I love teaching phonics and even more so, love to see the sense of achievement from children who are learning to read! It is a pleasure to run the phonics sessions in the hub, and aim to make the sessions interactive, fun and enjoyable!

  • How do I access the live sessions?

    You will receive a confirmation email from Zoom, containing details of your live registration.

    You will also have a reminder one hour before the start of each class.

    The live session can be accessed from the 'Join Webinar' button in these emails.

  • I've missed a session, can I have the recording?

    All recordings are uploaded within 24 hours to here - your dashboard - so you can watch whenever is convenient.
