Learning phase 5 alternative graphemes and common exception words.

Phase 5 builds builds upon Phase 4 sessions (blocks 1-3).

Begin to build your phase 5 phonics knowledge through fun interactive activities and games!

We will revisit consonant blends for reading and writing, alongside common exception (tricky) words learnt so far.

We will introduce alternative graphemes ay, oe, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue and aw alongside introducing common exception words ‘Mr’, ‘Mrs’, ‘their’, ‘oh’, and ‘people’.

We will use our knowledge of these alternative graphemes and common exception words to practise reading and children will be encouraged to ‘have a go’ at writing.

Regular games of bingo and Kahoot quizzes help us to consolidate what we have been learning!

Course Objectives:

To learn and recognise alternative graphemes for reading and recall for.

To apply knowledge of alternative graphemes when blending to read words, and when segmenting to spell words.

To learn to read and spell common exception words.

Resources Needed:

Pen and paper or a whiteboard and pen.

Children may like to use magnetic letters, or alternatively have the individual letters written out on pieces of paper.
