  • Description: Phase 5 alternative graphemes for reading and spelling, and common exception (tricky) words. In Phase 5, we will revisit alternative graphemes learnt and common exception (tricky) words learnt so far. We will introduce the alternative graphemes wh, ph, ew, oe, au, ey, alongside introducing the common exception words 'where', 'who', 'thought', 'though' and 'laughed'. We will use our knowledge of these alternative graphemes and common exception words to practise reading and writing words and sentences. To learn and recognise alternative graphemes introduced for reading and recall for spelling. To apply alternative graphemes when blending to read words and when segmenting to spell words. To learn to read and spell common exception words.
