Content

  • Forces - extended

What hits harder: a bullet, or a bus creeping along at walking pace? Why does a cannon roll backwards when it fires? And here is one that sounds wrong but is completely true: you are pulling the Earth upwards right now, with exactly the same force it is pulling you down.

This block is for single physics students only, and it goes considerably deeper than the shared sessions. You already know that forces make things speed up. Now we work out why a crumple zone saves your life, and the answer is stranger than you would expect. A crumple zone does not absorb the crash. It cannot reduce the momentum by a single unit. What it does is cleverer, and we will put numbers on it.

Across five sessions we will calculate what happens when two trolleys collide and stick, work out how fast a gun recoils, prove that an airbag reduces the force on your head by exactly the amount the physics predicts, and settle what each end of a scaffold plank is really carrying when someone stands near one end.

There will be momentum, impulse, Newton's third law and moments, all with worked answers and full exam practice. No new maths, just the ideas you already have, taken further than the double award ever goes.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block you will be able to calculate and apply momentum, conservation of momentum and impulse, explain Newton's third law correctly, and solve moments problems involving beams and supports, covering the separate physics only content of the forces topic.

Tutor

Ben .

IGCSE Physics Tutor

Hi Everyone! I am Ben, I am a qualified, award winning Physics teacher with a Physics degree from University of St Andrews and previous head of Primary STEM, so you could say Science is my thing.
I do physics differently. Lessons are built around real-world connections that make the maths and science click, answering the questions you never knew you wanted to ask: why your rollercoaster stays on the track? How black holes warp time? What's actually happening when you skid on ice? Whether you roll your eyes at the thought of formulae, or are a budding mad scientist, we will help you see the world around you through the eyes of Science.
We underpin all the work with solid science and maths, but make it engaging, relevant and actually interesting! Pop by to see Physics in a whole new light.

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

Susie, parent

“Thank you so much for everything!! You have been an absolute life saver. There was a time when I couldn't possibly imagine my son taking any GCSEs at all, and here we are ploughing through the past papers and sending him off to exams with a calm and confident son. Extraordinary! Thank goodness for you and your efforts to help kids like him - we will be eternally grateful.”

Ruth, parent

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
