Content

  • Physics: Sound

This can be a stand alone unit, but it also builds on the States of Matter unit, where children learned that materials can be solids, liquids, or gases.

Understanding how particles behave in each state is vital for this unit, which explores how sound travels through different media.

Children may also draw on prior experience with musical instruments in music lessons, but no formal science learning about sound is assumed.

    Specialist
    Resources Needed:

A printable resource checklist will be provided prior to the block starting, however key items needed include:

Investigate patterns in volume and pitch

Recognise that sound gets fainter with distance

Identify materials that absorb sound and explain how insulation works

Set up and carry out pattern-seeking enquiries

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:

👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors 👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists 👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers 👨🏻‍💻 Innovators 👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers 👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists 👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators

More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!
