Content

  • Chemistry: States of matter

This block builds on children’s prior learning, where they may have identified materials and explored their physical properties.

It develops their understanding by introducing the concept of states of matter and investigating how materials change state under different conditions.

It also prepares them for future learning, where they’ll apply this knowledge to separate mixtures and explore more complex changes in materials.

Ever wondered how chocolate melts, where puddles go, or what clouds are really made of?

In this exciting block, young scientists will get hands-on as they explore solids, liquids, gases and everything in between!

We’ll race melting chocolate, investigate the speed of evaporation, and even trap the water cycle in a bag.

Children will become chocolate testers, puddle detectives, and particle experts as they experiment with real materials, record their findings, and discover the science behind everyday phenomena.

With fun, practical experiments and relatable real-world links (hello, frozen toys and soggy tea towels!), this block is perfect for curious learners who love asking “why?” and getting stuck into science.

    Course Objectives:

By the end of the block, children will be able to:

Compare and group materials as solids, liquids, or gases

Understand and describe the particle arrangement in different states of matter

Observe and investigate how some materials change state when heated or cooled

Identify and describe melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation

Explain the processes in the water cycle, including the role of temperature

Set up and carry out fair tests and comparative investigations

Record results using tables, bar charts, and scientific language

Use scientific evidence to draw conclusions and explain findings

I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
