Content

  • Biology: Plants

This is the first science block of the 2025–2026 academic year, designed to introduce or revisit key concepts about plant biology.

It stands alone but also lays a strong foundation for future units on habitats, food chains, ecosystems, and scientific investigation skills.

No prior knowledge is required, but children who have explored the basics of living things or seasonal change may find familiar links.

Get ready to grow your science skills in this hands-on block all about plants!

Each week, children will take on the role of young botanists as they dissect real plants, carry out exciting investigations, model pollination with pom-poms and pipe cleaners, and track the growth of seeds in unusual conditions.

From exploring how water travels through a plant’s "pipes" to discovering the secret life of flowers, this block is bursting with fun experiments and wow moments all designed to help children understand how plants live, grow, and reproduce.

Perfect for curious minds and little fingers who love getting stuck in and finding out how the world works!

  • Specialist
    Resources Needed:

I aim to keep things simple and accessible! I will provide a detailed list at the start of the block, but here is a summary of what participants will need across the 5 weeks (household items wherever possible):

A real plant to observe (a supermarket herb plant or flower from a garden/park is ideal)

Celery or a white flower (e.g. carnation) and food colouring for water transport experiment

Small pots, clear cups, or yoghurt pots and soil or wet kitchen paper

Seeds (e.g. cress, sunflower, or bean seeds)

Access to light/dark spaces for plant growth investigation

Basic craft items (paper, scissors, glue, colouring pens)

Optional: pipe cleaners/pom-poms for flower pollination model

    Printed worksheets from the dashboard.

    Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, children will be able to:

Identify the main parts of a plant and describe their functions.

Explain how water travels through a plant and why this is important.

Understand what plants need to grow and compare different conditions.

Describe the process of pollination and fertilisation in flowering plants.

Explain how seeds are dispersed and describe the full life cycle of a flowering plant.

Set up and observe a simple scientific test, identifying patterns and drawing conclusions.

My name is Carrie Ann! I teach Primary and GCSE science in the hub. I have a degree in Biochemistry and over 16 years science teaching to my name, both in schools and the outdoor classroom. I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
