  • Description: In this block, we will explore the psychology behind mental health conditions, definitions and diagnoses. We will look at definitions of abnormality (and debate the use of this term itself and why it is often still used!), learn how mental health conditions are diagnosed, and some of the different biological and psychological explanations of them. Some of the questions we will explore are: What is abnormality in psychology? Is something considered abnormal always negative? How do doctors diagnose mental health conditions? Are there any problems with the diagnosis criteria? How do different psychological and biological perspectives explain various mental health conditions? Throughout the block we will draw upon case studies and examples from a range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, OCD, and phobias, to illustrate concepts, apply our learning and to support and challenge definitions and theories. Lesson overviews: 1. Definitions of abnormality 2. How a diagnosis is made & issues with validity and reliability 3. Bio explanations 4. Cognitive explanations 5. Behavioural explanations
