    Step into the world of clever strategy and scientific thinking in The Science of Slytherin. In this 5-week interactive science block, learners will explore the real science behind snakes, potions, light, deep-sea creatures and magical materials. From investigating how vipers inject venom to discovering how we see colour and why certain woods make better “wands”, this course blends serious science learning with hands-on experiments and critical thinking. Each session includes practical activities, discussion, and a short end-of-lesson quiz to build confidence and understanding. This block is ideal for curious learners who enjoy asking questions, testing ideas, and thinking strategically.

  • Course Objectives:
    By the end of this block, learners will be able to: • Describe the behaviour and adaptations of one viper and one constrictor. • Explain how at least three chemical reactions occur. • Explain how we see coloured light. • Describe the behaviour and habitat of a giant squid. • Explain what characteristics make an eagle owl a reliable pet for a wizard. • Compare the properties of elder wood with another type of wood and justify which would make the best wand. • Describe the chemical composition of water, its main properties, and how it changes state. Aims of the block: • To develop scientific thinking and reasoning. • To strengthen learners’ ability to explain how and why things happen. • To build confidence in using scientific vocabulary. • To encourage curiosity, observation and strategic problem-solving.

My name is Carrie Ann! I teach Primary and GCSE science in the hub. I have a degree in Biochemistry and over 16 years science teaching to my name, both in schools and the outdoor classroom. I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
