Content

  • Music. Join us for 5 engaging sessions composing music and even coding a virtual piano in Scratch! While this block stands alone, it will be helpful if your child has done some coding in Scratch prior to joining live so that they can confidently navigate the platform. Beginning with an introduction to the Scratch music extension, participants will delve progressively into creating musical loops, adding effects and instruments, crafting interactive music projects, code a virtual piano and finally present their own unique compositions to the group (optional). Through these hands-on tutorials participants will not only gain essential coding skills but also foster their creativity and musical expression in a fun and supportive environment.

  • *** Understand the basic principles of coding - including sequencing, loops and conditional statements. *** Apply computational thinking skills through creating musical compositions in Scratch, students will develop problem-solving abilities, logical reasoning and algorithmic thinking. *** Explore musical concepts including rhythm, melody, harmony and dynamics. *** Develop creativity and self-expression while experimenting with different sounds, effects and interactive elements. *** Understand the relationship between technology and music. This block both stands alone AND builds on previous coding experience. Some experience coding in Scratch will be helpful. Think about completing the beginners blocks from April and June 2022 and/or January 2023.

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!
