  • More Coding Challenges

Some experience coding in Scratch will be helpful but it's not essential as there will be a printout of the code to help all children keep up. 2 screens are needed so that children can watch the tutorial on one screen while coding on another. Scratch Coding is not suitable for tablets.

More Coding Challenges - this time with a wintery theme!

Each week in this engaging online coding course, children will be challenged to use their skills and knowledge to produce interactive games and programs at their own level. They’ll create snowflakes falling across a winter scene, build a snowman, make ice art, design a winter quiz game and even change winter backgrounds with the press of a button.

Each challenge is designed to introduce coding fundamentals like loops, event handling and sprite movement while allowing children to express their creativity. The lesson structure will ensure that both beginners and experienced coders can learn effectively and enjoy the process. Each participant will be able to choose appropriate challenges to match their skill level while working at their own pace.

  • There will be a chance to share projects at the end of the block. (Week 5). By the end of the course, they'll have a solid foundation in coding that they can build on in future projects.

    Course Objectives:

Learn to navigate the Scratch interface and create animations using basic programming blocks, fostering familiarity with sequential logic and event handling.

Develop skills in game development including movement controls and collision detection.

Gain proficiency in managing variables and implementing loops for dynamic game mechanics, such as scoring and clicking interactions.

Simulate virtual interactions, learning to track and manage variables and user inputs effectively.

Design and program multiple sprites and inputs to control movements, enhancing their understanding of coordination and user interaction in game design.

Tutor

Hannah Y

STEAM, Coding, Lego & JapanTutor

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!
