  • Escape Room

    Although this block stands alone, some experience of Scratch coding will be an advantage.

    Dive into the exciting world of game design with this block of coding tutorials, where children aged 8-14 will create their very own digital 'Escape Room' in Scratch. They’ll learn coding fundamentals, including variables, conditionals and sensing, while designing puzzles, interactive challenges, and multi-room adventures. Along the way, they’ll develop problem-solving skills, creativity and logic as they build and refine their games.

    This block caters to all experience levels: beginner coders will enjoy accessible challenges, while more advanced participants can tackle complex algorithms to stretch their skills.

    Perfect for budding game designers and coders who thrive on creative challenges!

  • Course Objectives:

    Understand Core Coding Concepts: Learn and apply variables, loops, conditionals and sensing to create interactive game elements in Scratch.

    Develop Problem-Solving Skills: Design, debug and refine algorithms to create puzzles and challenges for a digital escape room.

    Foster Creativity: Use imagination to design the storyline, visuals, and mechanics of an engaging, multi-room escape game.

    Apply Logical Thinking: Build sequences and solutions for puzzles that encourage computational and critical thinking.

    Collaborate and Communicate: Share projects, give and receive feedback, and present final games to peers.

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!
