Content

  • Platform Game

    In this 5 session Scratch Coding block, children will learn to create a platformer game while enhancing their coding skills through interactive and engaging tasks. The sessions begin with an introduction to platformer games, where the children will be challenged to create or choose a player sprite and code basic movement with gravity. They will then add jumping and platforms with collision detection in the second session. In the next session, participants will implement scoring and obstacles and code game-over conditions. The fourth session focuses on designing new levels, introducing level transitions, and adjusting difficulty. Finally, we will add sound effects, polish their games, and learn how to share their projects in the last session.

    Participants should have completed at least one block of coding in the hub or have experience of Scratch Coding prior to joining live sessions. The September 2024 block recordings will be a good place to start as the session style will be similar. January 2023 and January 2024 are also beginner level blocks of lessons that will help your child get familiar with Scratch.

    More experienced coders are welcome to code along at their own pace and level while those relatively new to coding can code along with me - following the 'Scratch Script' prompt sheets.

  • Participants will:

    1. Learn to navigate the Scratch interface and create animations using basic programming blocks, fostering familiarity with sequential logic and event handling.

    2. Develop skills in game development including movement controls and collision detection.

    3. Gain proficiency in managing variables and implementing loops for dynamic game mechanics, such as scoring and clicking interactions.

    4. Simulate virtual interactions, learning to track and manage variables and user inputs effectively.

    5. Design and program multiple sprites and inputs to control movements, enhancing their understanding of coordination and user interaction in game design.

    Children need a second screen to easily follow these sessions. One screen will be for watching the lesson on Zoom or via the recording and the second is for logging into Scratch and their coding. They will need a Scratch account to save their projects. Please make sure that you have authorised it prior to the first session. (Scratch send you one email after you create your account). Your child should think of a user name that is not their own and be reminded of internet safety and etiquette prior to sharing any of their projects.

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!

    You will receive a confirmation email from Zoom, containing details of your live registration. You will also have a reminder one hour before the start of each class. The live session can be accessed from the 'Join Webinar' button in these emails.

    All recordings are uploaded within 24hours to here - your dashboard - so you can watch whenever is convenient
