  • Description: As You Like It. BLOCK 1 OF 2 – Shakespeare – “As You Like It”. “All the world’s a stage And all the men and women merely players They have their exits and their entrances And one man in his time plays many parts.” Banished young lovers Orlando and Rosalind escape to the Forest of Arden with their friends and servants. In this idyllic setting they find the simple life confused by entangled love affairs, cross-dressing, poems and even a lion…! AS YOU LIKE IT is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, focusing on the delights of love, the vagaries of human experience and the contrast between life in the court and in the country, Shakespeare’s romantic plot is full of humorous and clever word play. This play consists of five Acts and in order to be able to cover as much of it as possible, we are covering it over two blocks with a total of ten sessions, with a mixture of film clips, script reading and discussion about language, themes and characters. The script is freely available online. NOTE: This is Block 1 of 2 and covers the first half of the play; the second half will be covered in the next block. L/O: We will study language, themes and characters and learn about the context of the play. We will also consider GCSE assessment objectives.
