  • Anthony and Cleopatra

    Block 1

    This is Block 1 of 2 - a new play.

    "Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale

    Where most she satisfies.

    Our next Shakespeare play will be the historical epic Antony and Cleopatra. Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire, commands the eastern Mediterranean. Despite his infatuation with Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, he has to return to Rome. As his fellow ruler Octavius schemes, Mark Antony rejoins Cleopatra and driven by blind passion, they confront the mighty empire.

    Themes of ambition, power, love, friendship and deception – laced with a fascinating portrait of self-destructive passion – fuel Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy.

  • This play consists of five Acts and in order to be able to cover as much of it as possible, we are covering it over two blocks with a total of ten sessions, with a mixture of film clips, script reading and discussion about language, themes and characters.

    The script is freely available online.

    The play is mainly studied for A Level English Literature qualifications, so GCSE questions will not be included, although some language analysis will be undertaken.

    NOTE: This is Block 1 of 2.

    Course Objectives:

    We will learn about the plot and structure, the characters and themes and the language of Shakespeare.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.

    You will also have a reminder one hour before the start of each class.

    The live session can be accessed from the 'Join Webinar' button in these emails.

    All recordings are uploaded within 24 hours to here - your dashboard - so you can watch whenever is convenient.
