  • The Merchant of Venice - Block 2 of 2

    It is essential to have done Block 1 (the previous block) before starting this one.

    And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?”

    Antonio’s best friend, Bassanio, is in love with Portia, a wise and wealthy heiress and need three thousand ducats to press his suit. With Antonio’s wealth tied up in ships at sea, he approaches Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, who agrees to lend him the money – with a very unusual forfeit should the debt not be paid. When Antonio’s ships are lost at sea, Shylock calls in his debt … A popular GCSE English Literature option, used by most major exam boards, this course will cover the whole play and discuss several exam questions and how to tackle them. This play consists of five Acts and in order to be able to cover as much of it as possible, we are covering it over two blocks with a total of ten sessions, with a mixture of film clips, script reading and discussion about language, themes and characters. The script is freely available online.

    NOTE: This is Block 2 of 2. Block 1 should be completed prior to this.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.
