  • Light, Colour and the Science of Seeing

Welcome to Light, Colour and the Science of Seeing
    - Where curiosity shines and the invisible becomes visible.
Designed for children aged 7–14, this engaging hands-on module explores how we see the world through light, colour, and energy. Through exciting experiments and creative investigations, children will uncover the science behind rainbows, shadows, glowing reactions, and optical illusions.
From splitting light into spectacular spectra to exploring invisible UV rays and creating mind-bending visual tricks, each session encourages children to think like scientists—observing carefully, experimenting boldly, and questioning what they see.
Blending science, creativity, and discovery, this module builds understanding of how light behaves and how our eyes and brains interpret the world around us.
Perfect for curious thinkers, creative explorers, and children who love a little bit of magic in their science.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

We mostly use everyday household resources - please check the resource list each week. Where specialist items may be needed I will give as much notice as possible. This block will use a UV torch, UV-reactive beads, and a glow stick. I will provide links of where to buy them and also offer a mini kit. There is no obligation to buy anything as you can join in with other activities and watch the demos on the screen.

Dr Jo .

Nature Quest and STEAM Explorers Tutor

Hi, I’m Dr Jo – scientist and educator. I teach Nature Quest and STEAM Explorers in the Hub, where we dive into the wonders of science, nature, and creative problem-solving - all through hands-on, creative, curious learning.
With a background in science and years of experience in education, I’m passionate about sparking that “wow!” moment in children — whether we’re mixing potions from plants, exploring the changing Earth, or inventing with STEAM. I love helping young learners connect ideas, ask big questions, and explore the world through fun, engaging, and meaningful experiences.
When I’m not teaching in the Hub, you might find me delivering workshops, running STEM clubs, developing learning resources, supporting teachers, and training scientists!
I can’t wait to welcome you to the adventure - let’s explore, experiment and get inspired by the amazing world around us!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
