  • Description: The Amazing Bean Maze (repeated from April 2022). I simply love this STEAM project! I've done various versions of this experiment almost every year that I've been a teacher and every year, without fail, I’m amazed at what happens when you plant a little seed in a dark maze.... This term's topic is all about plants and growing things. SCIENCE: We'll be planting some beans and observing them growing in different conditions as well as learning about the different parts of a plant and how it reproduces. TECHNOLOGY: Programming a micro:bit to help us know when to water our plants. (How cool is that?) Don't worry if you don't have a micro:bit, I'll be sharing mine in the sessions so you can see what it does. ENGINEERING: Design and construct a dark maze for your plant to find its way through to the light at the end! You'll need a cardboard box that your plant pot will fit inside. ART: We'll look at art in nature and nature in art. MATHS: Measuring plant growth, plotting graphs, Fibonacci sequence... We'll also enjoy a topic related story: 'Greenling' by Levi Pinfold L/O: Enjoy the topic of 'Growing Things' through this fascinating STEAM project. * designing and making a bean maze to observe how plants grow towards the light. * investigating what plants need to grow. * germination. * the life cycle of a bean plant. * pollination. * how plants absorb water and nutrients from the ground * coding a micro:bit moisture sensor so you know when to water your plants * photosynthesis - how plants produce their own food * phototropism - how and why plants grow towards the light * plotting growth of plants on a graph * art and maths in nature - The Fibonacci Sequence * drawing a Fibonacci spiral and creating spiral art. *Enjoy the story of Greenling by Levi Pinfold.
