Content

  • Marvellous Measures

In our new Maths block, Marvellous Measures, we will delve into the world of metric measurements, understanding and recalling measures facts and how to convert between metric units of measure.

We will apply our understanding of measures to puzzles and problem solving and reasoning with measures.

We will use mm, cm and m to calculate area, perimeter of rectilinear shapes, triangles, parallelograms and volume of cubes and cuboids.

Finally, we will apply our understanding of units of time when solving problems.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

Multilink cubes/1cm cubes (optional to build cubes/cuboids) 30cm ruler

  • Course Objectives:

    Year 5:

Convert between different units of measure (e.g. kilometre and metre; metre and centimetre; centimetre and millimetre; kilogram and gram; litre and millilitre).

Measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in centimetres and metres.

Calculate and compare the area of squares and rectangles including using standard units, square centimetres (cm2) and square metres (m2) and estimate the area of irregular shapes.

Recognise and estimate volume. Solve problems involving converting between units of time.

Use all four operations to solve problems involving measure [for example, length, mass, volume, money] using decimal notation, including scaling.

    Year 6:

Solve problems involving the calculation and conversion of units of measure, using decimal notation up to three decimal places where appropriate.

Use, read, write and convert between standard units, converting measurements of length, mass, volume and time from a smaller unit of measure to a larger unit.

Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles.

Tutor

Stacey .

Year 5/6 Tutor

Hiya everyone, I’m Stacey. I’m a primary school teacher from Nottinghamshire. Currently I teach year 6 and have done for the last 6 years as once you’re in they don’t tend to let you out. 😂 I have also taught in years 3 and 5. The best part about my job is watching those lightbulb moments where children just get it! I love watching them grow in confidence from the beginning to the end of a lesson! Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and taking my Spanish rescue dog , Lila, on long treks through the woods! We’ve found many deer but never any bears on our hunts!
