Content

  • Join Hannah for five engaging sessions, where participants will explore the heroic tale of Grace Darling's courageous rescue as well as the S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) of lighthouses. Through interactive discussions, hands-on activities and engineering challenges, participants will learn about series and parallel circuits while constructing a model lighthouse complete with working light and the option of a rotational mechanism for those up for the challenge! Join us for an immersive experience that combines history, engineering and creativity, inspiring young engineers to explore the wonders of S.T.E.A.M through the lens of maritime heroism. Participants will need: a cardboard tube (such as a Pringles tube), disposable plastic water bottle (I used a 75cl Evian water bottle), a bulb and bulb holder, switch, crocodile clip leads, (or insulated wire), battery case + zinc* batteries, (IMPORTANT check the voltage of the bulb!), Silver reflective card, paper, card, paint etc to finish and decorate your lighthouse. Plus, glue, tape, a ruler and scissors. *zinc batteries are recommended because they don’t get so hot if short circuited. If you are making the rotating mechanism too, you’ll also need: a geared motor, 2 wheels, dowel rod and a cotton reel. Make sure your bulbs and motor have a compatible voltage if you want them to work on the same circuit. Otherwise, you can build 2 separate circuits.

  • Hannah has put together a kit to accompany this block - to save you the work! The cost of a kit is £34. This includes 2 bulbs and bulb holders, (We only need one for the lighthouse but we'll use 2 in one of the lessons), 1 geared motor, 4 crocodile clips leads, 1 switch, 1 battery holder, 2 x wheels, dowel rod, cotton reel, cable ties and silver card all in a cute drawstring bag. If your child is a bit younger and they are happy to make a lighthouse that just lights up without moving parts, then I can put together a kit with simple circuit components for this. Do get in touch if you have any questions. Please email Hannah for details of how to order. [email protected]

  • Science: Understand the principles of electricity and circuits, including series and parallel circuits... Explore the scientific concepts behind the operation of lighthouses, including optics, light refraction and signal transmission... Technology: Develop practical skills in designing, constructing, and testing model lighthouses, integrating knowledge of materials, structures, and mechanisms... Engineering: Apply engineering design processes to create a model lighthouse, incorporating elements of design, colour and aesthetics... Mathematics: Apply mathematical concepts such as measurement, scale and proportion in design IMPORTANT: For live sessions, please register and then use the link in your zoom email. . . . . . . . STEAM, Coding, Lego & JapanTutor

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”

“This group is without doubt an absolute blessing. Fantastic classes with amazing teachers at an extremely reasonable price. I for one am so thankful to you and your team for everything you all do. We appreciate the hub so much and are very grateful xx ”

Claire, Parent

“Our family are full time travellers and the hub is a life line for us. The children get to see and speak to adults who show a real interest in their learning and their lives. They get to pick lessons that they are interested in and have fun learning something new. The social hub was a real life line for us too. My 3 have made friends and love getting to chat to children and adults daily too. ”

Donna, Parent

“£2 tuition hub was the best resource I found my entire time home educating. I’m still currently using the £2 Hub 3 years later”

Maxine, Parent

“Fantastic group has helped us through 3+ years of home ed, wish we knew of you before that when we first started ”

Sharon, Parent

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”
