Design and Make Pop-up Cards or a Pop-up Book that LIGHTS UP! (age 7-12). Join Hannah to learn about pop-up paper engineering and how to build a circuit using LEDs in this fun and creative project. Budding engineers will explore pop-up mechanisms and design their own pop-up greeting cards or book. Participants will have the option to incorporate paper circuits into their creations so that they light up when the pages are opened or when a button is pressed! (LED circuit kit available to order from Hannah*). Participants will need: Card, glue, tape, scissors*, craft knife*, metal ruler, pencil, felt tip pens for the pop-up. For the circuit, we'll use conductive tape, LEDs and coin batteries* for the circuit (optional). This project builds upon the block we did in September 2022 in which I demonstrated simple pop-up mechanisms and participants made pop-up cards and books. If you have time, I recommend taking a look. *Adult supervision is required during this project. Keep coin batteries and sharp tools from babies and young children!

  • Overall, the goal is to provide a learning experience that combines art, engineering and storytelling, empowering children to develop their creativity while mastering skills in designing and paper engineering. Participants will: Explore pop-up mechanisms. Develop precise cutting, scoring, folding, and joining techniques. Develop creativity and artistic expression as they experiment with different graphic styles to match the themes and audiences of their pop-up books or cards. Develop problem-solving skills by matching card mechanisms to desired movements, troubleshooting issues, and refining their designs for optimal functionality. Learn how to build a circuit and integrate lights into their pop-up creations. This block builds on S.T.E.A.M September 2022. It is no essential, but may help participants pre-learn some pop-up paper engineering techniques if they look at the recording before

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!

“£2 tuition hub was the best resource I found my entire time home educating. I’m still currently using the £2 Hub 3 years later”

Maxine, Parent

“Fantastic group has helped us through 3+ years of home ed, wish we knew of you before that when we first started ”

Sharon, Parent

“This group is without doubt an absolute blessing. Fantastic classes with amazing teachers at an extremely reasonable price. I for one am so thankful to you and your team for everything you all do. We appreciate the hub so much and are very grateful xx ”

Claire, Parent

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”

Holly, Parent

“Our family are full time travellers and the hub is a life line for us. The children get to see and speak to adults who show a real interest in their learning and their lives. They get to pick lessons that they are interested in and have fun learning something new. The social hub was a real life line for us too. My 3 have made friends and love getting to chat to children and adults daily too. ”

Donna, Parent

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”
